Bentley OpenUtilities CONNECT Edition Help

Creating Feature Types

Creating a new feature type adds it to the list of existing feature types in the Feature Type Tree. Once the name of the new feature type appears in the list, you can proceed with configuration tasks. The new feature type will then be displayed in the Features Catalog of Bentley OpenUtilities Designer, although this will depend on how it has been configured.

The New command on the shortcut menu is used to create a feature type. This command adds a new node at the top of the tree with an edit box in which you can type the name of the feature type. The text string entered becomes the display name of the feature type-that is, the name that appears in Bentley OpenUtilities Designer's Features Catalog and other areas of the user interface. The display name must be unique.

Before leaving the new node, you must supply the following required information on the Properties page for the new feature type:

  • Display Name
  • Internal Name
  • GIS Database
  • GIS Table
  • Placeable, Displayable, or Design Only
  • Structure or Device (if the Geometry setting is Point)
  • Geometry (either Point or Span must be selected)
  • Icon (the No Icon setting is a valid choice)

In addition, if the GIS Table name is a duplicate of a GIS Table name for another feature type, the Distinguishing Attribute information is required.

To create a new feature type

  1. Right-click anywhere in the Feature Type Tree pane and then select New from the shortcut menu.
  2. In the empty edit box at the top of the tree, type the unique display name of the new feature type.
  3. On the Properties page, supply the required information about the new feature type.
  4. On the Attributes page, supply the required attributes of the new feature type.
  5. If the new feature type is a GIS object, supply the required information on the Geometries page and the State Transitions page.
  6. If the new feature type is placeable, supply any desired business rules on the Business Rules page.
  7. Contact your Oracle DBA and request that the corresponding table be inserted into the Bentley OpenUtilities Designer database.
